There is something
so relaxing about watching fish swim in a pond. The way they just
float by, and then with a simple swish of their tail, they
disappear. Most people seem to think that Koi are the perfect
fish for a backyard pond. The gold color tends to make them easy
to spot and they are so elegant swimming in a pond.
Koi like to swim around and hide behind rocks and plants. And the
bigger your pond, the more rocks and plants you can install for your
Koi to hide behind.
You can also use a simple gold fish or even other aquarium fish for you
backyard pond. Betas (Siamese Fighting Fish) also work well in a
backyard pond. It is similar to their natural habitat.
However, most people tend to use Koi as the fish of choice in their
pond.
Many people will buy several Koi to put in their pond and are
disappointed when the fish die after just a few days or weeks.
They’ve learned the hard way they need to keep a Koi fish pond clean
and filtered. Inadvertently, they killed their own fish.
After you make sure your water garden pumps and filters are working
right, you can then stock your pond with Koi. Depending on your
budget, you can get Koi in any size you want and in a variety of
colors. They range from solid gold, bright orange, pale yellow,
white, and a multitude of color combinations. They also range in
size, and the larger ones can be quite expensive. But you can get
smaller Koi and they will grow quite large on their own. Their
size depends upon the size of your backyard pond and how much food you
feed them.
Most people would much rather see several small Koi swimming in a
garden pond, than just one big fish. It is much more entertaining
seeing several fish interacting with each other, and will provide hours
of enjoyment to your fountain.
Some people have stocked their pond with catfish, bass and other types
of fish that are native to the creeks and streams in the area they live
in. If you are going to use native fish, you will want to check
with the local aquarium supply center to determine the proper care and
feeding of them.
Again, there are a lot of different types of fish you can use in your
pond; the major determining factor is the size of the pond, and how
much money you are willing to invest in stocking your pond with
fish.
