You’ve decided to
build a backyard pond. You have the perfect place for it already
picked out; you can just envision the quite solitude that comes from
having a beautiful fountain splashing into your pond. Now the
question, where do you get pond supplies?
You can find a good selection of pond supplies at the local big box
hardware store. However, keep in mind, they have thousands of
items in the store, and you may be hit or miss when it comes to getting
answers to your questions. Sometimes you get lucky and the
nursery department people do understand about pond supplies, but other
times, you are just left on your own.
You can also go to your local nursery. They have a lot of
different plants that will work with your garden pond, and they may
even have a lot of pond supplies, but these folks generally have a
great knowledge about plants, they sometimes do not have the expertise
you need to help with pond supplies.
In some of the bigger metropolitan areas, you may even find a water
garden supply center. If you do, you can find a wealth of
information about pond supplies, pumps, filers and fish.
But most people are not fortunate enough to have a water garden supply
center near them. If you fit in this category, you can always go
online to find a good pond supply store. A good online store will
list several different types of pumps, filters and everything else
needed for your water garden. They will also explain the
different types of items you need for the different style of water
garden you have. For example, if you have Koi, you need a
different type of filter than you will for just a simple
waterfall. Don’t expect a swimming pool filter to work
effectively for a Koi pond either.
Also, most ponds will need a pump to circulate the water, to help keep
if from becoming stagnant. Even if you are building a simple
pond, you should have a pump of some sort to keep the water
circulating. The size of the pump depends on what you are trying
to accomplish.
If you are lifting the water a short distance (2 to 3 feet) you only
need a small pump to accomplish this. However, if you are trying
to lift a lot of water 7 to 10 feet higher than your pond, you will
need a much bigger pump. Be sure and determine what you want to
accomplish, and then read the instructions on the pump to select the
size pump you need.
Remember, some stores do not stock pump equipment year round, so it is
important you know which filter product you need for you backyard pond,
and stock up for the winter months ahead of time.
Do you need lighting for your patio pond? If you want to enjoy
your water garden at night, you need to have lighting around it.
This ranges from submerged lighting, to accent lighting for your trees
and plants.
Regardless of where you find your pond supplies, having a water garden
will make you backyard more functional and more pleasant for years to
come.
